The annual JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience has become synonymous with razor sharp cutting-edge contemporary dance from national, African and international performers and dance makers. Presented by the Centre for Creative Arts (University of KwaZulu-Natal) and with principal funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the 14th edition of JOMBA! takes place from August 29 to September 9 at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and other venues.
This year’s festival is imbued with a strong French flavour as part of the France South Africa Season exchange programme. Festival highlights include the visually stunning Henriette et Matisse by French choreographer Michel Kelemenis, a return to Durban by South Africa’s legendary dance maker Vincent Mantsoe who will premiere a new solo work ,and Johannesburg’s provocative dance theatre maker PJ Sabbagha who is collaborating with Reunion Island’s Eric Languet.
The festival will also feature its ground breaking JOMBA! City – an interactive, outdoor dance taking-back-of-the-city event on August 31. Watch this space for workshops and master classes.
