Grahamstown: July6, 2012 – Review by Philisiwe Sithole
Bapa Theatre Academy in association with National Arts Festival presents Sobukwe my Husband written and directed by Given Jikwana. The production is made up of students studying drama in Bapa Theatre Academy in Cape Town. Set in a semi-rural area, the play is based on the life of the late Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe and focuses on a love triangle and all the heartaches it creates.
The actors delivered truthful performances, the music helped with changing the scenes, the show interacts with the audience without a “fourth wall”. Sobukwe my Husband is a commemoration show enticed with celebration of his struggle. The script is well written and well researched.
Likelela Lamla gave a meaningful performance as Mrs Sobukwe. The rest of the cast included Mzukisi Ginyana, ,Mzuvumle Gana, Dimakatso Ellof, Andisiwe Makhasi, Sizwe Lubengu, Banathi Dangazele, Anathi Volwana and Nandipha Maswana.
There are further performances at the B2 Arena on July 6 at 18h30 and July 7 at 20h30. – Philisiwe Sithole
