SOUTHERN EXPOSURE

Grahamstown: July 3, 2012 – Review by Philisiwe Sithole

Flatfoot Dance Company in association with National Arts Festival presented two works choreographed by Lliane Loots in Southern Exposure.

Skin premiered in 2011 at the Jomba Contemporary Dance Festival. Performed by Lerato Lipere, the dance piece is a captured reflection of a Swazi reed dance for the king, accompanied by film /video installations. Skin is a confronting dance piece about the violation of woman in their bodies, it is an honest and thought-provoking piece filled with heartfelt pulsating moves.

Mapping Nostalgia is choreographed by Lliane Loots in collaboration with the dancers. There is a live accompaniment from Madala Kunene and Mandla Matsha and their music maps the spaces between the ears and the heart. Mapping Nostalgia is a reminiscence dance piece about the choreographer's dreams and hopes that were not fulfilled in the year 1994 and a historical lineage of Ingrid Jonker. The dancers coloured the stage with titillating engagement and kept us captivated and foot tapping. They included Zintle Nzama, Julia Wilson, Lerato Lipere, Sifiso Majola, Sifiso Kitsona Khumalo and Tshediso Kabulu. – Philisiwe Sithole
