The DUT Children’s Theatre Festival, in collaboration with Assitej, will profile the works of Clinton Marius (with the exception of an adaptation by Dr. Pamela Tancsik) of one of the Sanskrit stories of Panchatantra published by Children’s Book Trust in New Delhi.

The second Children’s Theatre Festival will be held from September 21 to 27, 2012, at the DUT Courtyard Theatre where seven of Marius' plays will be presented for young audiences.

“This is such a wonderful opportunity to simultaneously acknowledge our KwaZulu-Natal writers, encourage a culture of theatre goers, and invite literary works with positive messages to take centre stage” said DUT Drama and Production Studies head, Professor Deborah Lutge, who has introduced three new festivals at DUT over the past ten years.

“Approximately ten years ago, I founded the New Directors Festival where new directors, under an advisor, direct their first play. This occurs biannually in April and July. In 2010, I introduced the first New Playwrights Festival which presents new play readings annually in May. These plays all involve new writers publicly presenting for the first time or working in collaboration with seasoned writers to stage their collaborations. The third Festival is the DUT Children’s Theatre Festival featuring an established and award winning writer of children’s plays held annually in September to coincide with celebrating Durban, literacy and heritage,” said Lutge.

The DUT Children’s Theatre Festival facilitated by new Theatre Manager, Mthandazo Mofokeng who serves as Lighting Designer and general Technical Director of all the Festivals, will offer the following line-up:

September 21 (18h00): The Fantastic Flying Flea Circus written and directed by Clinton Marius.

September 22: Clinton Marius’ The Calf With No Name (09h30) and Going … Going… directed by Siza Mthembu and Deb Lutge (11h30).
