The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s next
concert tonight (October 18) is themed A
Trio of Talents.
The concert opens with two Hungarian
masterpieces and the orchestra welcomes back Tibor Boganyi to the podium to
conduct the music of his countrymen. The first piece of the evening is Kodály’s
Dances of Galánta, followed by
Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major, performed by Konstantin Scherbakov.
Scherbakov is a highly accomplished soloist and has given solo performances in
35 countries.
In the second half of the concert, South
African tenor Musa Nkuna will join soprano Estelle Kruger to present a gripping
selection of arias and duets by Italian and French composers. Musa studied
singing with James Conrad in Durban and with Pierre-André Blaser at the
Conservatoire de Lausanne in Switzerland. Estelle is a Pretoria-born South
African soprano who holds a Masters degree in opera performance from the San
Francisco Conservatory of Music and from the Pretoria Technikon Opera School.
The public is reminded that there will be
no open rehearsal at 10h00 for this concert.
The concert takes place in the Durban City
Hall at 19h30. The spring season will continue to run until November 1, with
concerts being held every Thursday. Pre-concert talks take place at the
Playhouse Alhambra Room at 18h15 on the night of each concert. The speakers for
the rest of the season are – Michael Green (October 18); Barry Edwards (October
25) and Stavros Anthias (November 1).
