KATHAKRITI

(Guru Shri Manesh Mahara)

Kala Darshan – Institute of classical music and dance - will stage Kathakriti, a traditional classical Kathak performance by Guru Shri Manesh Maharaj and his senior students, Niveshan Munsamy and Ishka Nanoo on October 27 in Northdale, Pietermaritzburg and on November 3 at the Pattundeen Theatre in Chatsworth.

Kala Darshan was established in 1999 to preserve and propagate the rich cultural heritage of Indian classical music and dance in South Africa. Students follow a syllabus as laid down by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (India) for music and Nritya Darshan (India) for kathak. Annual performances are staged where students are afforded the opportunity to showcase their talents before a live audience. Through the programmes, Kala Darshan has assisted numerous non-governmental and religious organisations raise funds for their respective projects.

Kathakriti focuses on the poetic works of Tulsidas, Meerabai and Kabirdas as well as other composers and writers. Saint Tulsidas, a great devotee of Shri Ram, is well-known for translating the great Hindu epic the Ramayana into Hindi, making it accessible to everyone. Meerabai, a great devotee of Shri Krishna, relinquished her position as a Rajput queen and adopted a nomadic lifestyle all in service of Shri Krishna. Saint Kabirdas endeavoured to unite the Hindu and Muslim communities through his writings.

Kathakriti showcases some of the works of these great poets and is steeped in spirituality. In keeping with the tradition and nature of Kathak, the technical aspect of the dance form is highlighted by intricate rhythm, complex footwork and swift pirouettes making it a unique visual experience. The show promises to captivate and enthral a diverse audience with its rich music score, vibrant choreography and exquisite costumes, transporting the audience on a pilgrimage that transcends the material into the spiritual.

Performances will take place on October 27 at 19h00 at the PAFTA Hall in Northdale, Pietermaritzburg, and on November 3 at 19h00 at the Pattundeen Theatre (ABH - Chatsworth). Tickets R50 available at the door. Further information on 082 422 6865.
