Friends
of Music will host their next recital this evening (October 23) featuring saxophinists
David Salleras from Spain and Maxine Matthews from South
Africa. They will be performing with acclaimed KZN pianist Christopher Duigan
A recipient of international awards, Salleras has created a new form
of writing for the saxophone. After finishing his studies at the conservatoire
in Barcelona, he won a scholarship to continue his studies in France with
Jean-Yves Fourmeau and Nicolas Prost in Paris. Here he distinguished himself
showing an outstanding sense of improvisation, mixing contemporary music and
traditional Spanish idioms. His contact with multiple musical genres and his
unique interpretations were encouraged, leading to the creation of new
compositions and performances.
Matthews started playing the saxophone at
the age of 12 years at the Kimberley Academy of Music. In 2013 she moved to
Boston (USA) to start her undergraduate degree in Music Performance at the
prestigious Berklee College of Music.
Needing no introduction to KZN audiences, Duigan
is recognized as a “South African piano Icon” and a Steinway Artist.
The Prelude Performer for the evening,
funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, will be trumpeter Celukuthula
Ngema.
The concert will take place at 19h45
tonight (October 23) at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort (K.E. Masinga)
Road, Durban. Tickets R70 (R60 FOM members and R20 orchestral / students) Booking
