(Laura Bosenberg and
Thomas Thorne)
The Cape Town City Ballet is to present Coppélia in the
Playhouse for a short run which offers to provide ideal entertainment for the whole family.
Based on the well-known
story by E T A Hoffman, Coppélia is
light-hearted ballet at its best. It incorporates romance, intrigue and
deception, transporting audiences to a world of fairytale magic and happy
endings. A mysterious inventor, Doctor
Coppélius, has made a lifesize dancing doll. It is so lifelike that Franz, a village swain, is infatuated
with it and sets aside his true heart's desire, Swanilda. In the second act, the feisty Swanilda shows him his
folly by dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life!
Laura Bosenberg and
Thomas Thorne feature in the lead roles of Swanilda and Franz. Alternating in the role of Swanilda will be Elizabeth Nienaber
and Celeste George. Alternating
in the role of Franz will be Ivan Boonzaaier and Alexander Vivian-Riding. Johnny
Bovang and Mervyn Williams share the role of Dr. Coppélius.
The production is by Robin Van Wyk and is danced to the
enchanting music of Leo Delibes. The pivotal
role of Dr Coppélius is taken by
veteran dancers and superb character artists, Johnny Bovang and Mervyn Williams.
The Cape Town City Ballet will be
accompanied by the Kwazulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Naum Rousine.
Coppélia will run in the Playhouse
Opera from November 21 to 24 with performances at 19h30 (with an
extra performance on November 24 at 14h00) and on November 25 at 15h00. There
is a performance for schools on November 23 at 12h00. Tickets between R120 and R150
