CREATIVE SCRAPBOOK PIECING 4

The craft of scrapbooking continues unabated. (Review by Cherry MacIldowie)

Marina du Plessis is a highly experienced scrapbook artist and teacher. As a full time primary schoolteacher and author/illustrator of a number of books relating to children; and as the author of the first three books in Creative Scrapbook Piecing, she is more than qualified to guide fans of scrapbooking in this popular art form.

Creative Scrapbook Piecing 4 concentrates on the use of paper to create three dimensional ‘figurines’, as well as frames, letters, tags, envelopes and decorative lettering.

There are over 40 projects with their templates covered in the book and are easily adapted to mix and match to the scrapper’s personal choice. All projects are accompanied by full colour photographs and clear instructions and ideas for both advanced and beginner scrappers.

Although not something I’m particularly interested in, I found an insight to this craft from Marina’s book. In the Author’s Note Marina states: “To the novices out there, let this be a warning: scrapbooking takes the term ‘addiction’ to a whole new level!”

People often find conventional embellishments obtained from craft shops to be expensive so Marina can guide the scrapper in making their own 3D ‘figurines’, as she says: “I’m in awe of the properties of paper. You can create just about anything out of it.”

There is a comprehensive page devoted to Terms and Techniques and two fully-photographed pages on how to build a 3D figurine, detailing each stage that even I would be able to follow. Then it is straight into the themed projects and their accompanying templates on consecutive pages making for easy photocopying. Marina starts each project off with a paragraph on pertinent points to take into account and then gives step-by-step instructions on how to achieve the finished result.

With Christmas fast approaching, this book would make the ideal gift for the person who has a love of scrapbooking or has expressed a desire to learn how to scrapbook. All the pictures taken on the family holiday can be turned into a project which will last well into the year and enhance the happy memories.
