Presented in
association with The Playhouse Company, Stable Theatre offers its warm-hearted,
lively and entertaining play, “Nkanyezi –
The Star” during the festive season in The Playhouse Loft.
The production is created by the
award-winning team of director Thuli Dumakude, musical director Faca Kulu and
scriptwriter/assistant director Caroline Smart.
It was made possible through the Johnnie
Walker Celebrating Strides Award. Internationally-renowned author, playwright,
director and choreographer Welcome Msomi was the winner of the arts category of
the 2010 Award. It was his wish that Stable Theatre in Durban be the recipient
of the bursar award attached to his win, thereby honouring his roots as an
actor in this city.
The play
incorporates the philosophy of the Johnnie Walker Celebrating Strides Award –
“dream big and keep walking” – while honouring Welcome Msomi’s aim to create
new South African work that binds cultures and offers the sharing of beliefs
and values.
It is the day
before Christmas Eve. Four young women are preparing to celebrate the
successful close of their inaugural year in the fashion business. They are
putting together ornaments from their beading suppliers to decorate a Christmas
tree which they will present to the orphanage down the road. As the evening
progresses, they delight in their memories and reflect on how far they have
come. However, there are some major surprises in store in what becomes a very
eventful evening!
“It is with great
pleasure that Stable Theatre accepted the invitation to present this production
in association with The Playhouse Company,” says Thanduxolo Zulu, Stable
Theatre’s Centre Manager. “It is an indication that our organisation is now
making itself felt as a viable theatre venue that encourages new work.”

Khanyisile Jwaha, Faca Kulu, Lyschelle Linderboom, Thabani Mahlobo, Robyn Mc
Harry and Derosha Moodley.
“Nkanyezi – The Star” will run in the
Playhouse Loft from December 7 to 14 at 19h00. There are matinee performances
on December 8 and 15 at 14h00. (Evening performances on December 8 and 15 are
