THE CHRISTMAS CONCERT

(Maxine Matthews)

With the festive season upon us, it is time to take this opportunity to come together and enjoy a special Christmas Concert that unites and celebrates a season of goodwill in Pietermaritzburg.

Parklane SUPERSPAR in association with Christopher Duigan’s Music Revival presents The Christmas Concert in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on December 11.

Featured artist in this concert will be Natalie Rungan, the KZN pop diva with a voice described as 'pure sunshine', supported by her band in a selection of contemporary Christmas material. Also featured are Top Brass, a quintet of KZNPO musicians who add traditional Christmas flare, and Christopher Cockburn (organ) who, together with Cape Town-based conductor Albert Horne, will lead the audience in a singing of selection of favourite carols.

Albert Horne conducted the Last Night of the Proms in February and won public favour with his enthusiastic encouragement of the audience. As Chorus Master of the Cape Town City Opera, he recently collaborated with Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in Berlin in June this year – a major career highlight.

The Maritzburg College Gospel Choir, one of a variety musical exports that the school now produces, will entertain as will the young and talented Maxine Matthews playing the soprano saxophone, with pianist Christopher Duigan. Together they will play improvisations on carol melodies and a new composition by local composer Richard Guinness, The Night before Christmas: A Summer Song. Young local popstar Ruby Gill sings the classic Little Drummer Boy.

Altogether this offers a top-class concert performance of favourite music that combines both traditional and contemporary elements in an elegant and sophisticated evening. The audience are encouraged to follow a smart and elegant cress code. Eats and drinks are provided as well as a programme for every person.

The Christmas Concert takes place in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on December 11 at 19h00. Tickets R100 to 160 (R60 for under-18s,and concession for pensioners on selected seats) on sale at Dulce Coffee Shop at Parklane SUPERSPAR, Pietermaritzburg, or 033 342 3487.

The Christmas Concert is presented by Parklane SUPERSPAR and Christopher Duigan's Music Revival with support from The Witness and CPW.
