DEATH OF JOE FREEDMAN

Lighting designer Joe Freedman recently passed away in Durban. This tribute comes from acclaimed choreographer Ashley Killar who was Artistic Director and Head of Ballet at the Natal Performing Arts Council (NAPAC), now the Playhouse Company,  from 1985 to 1991.

Joe Freedman was lighting designer for the majority of Napac Dance Company's productions. Always patient and considerate of the dancers and the twitchy choreographers alike, and a real gentleman with his crew, he was an absolute pleasure to work with.

There never seems to be enough time to light a show, but whatever the pressure he worked magic in his quiet, unassuming way. Joe played a huge part in making the dancers and the sets and costumes look their best. He was an inspirational friend of theatre. – Ashley Killar
