PICTURES OF YOU

(Dorian Burstein and Liezl de Kock)

A Conspiracy of Clowns and The Theatre–St Anne’s College will present Pictures of You featuring Liezl de Kock (Fleur du Cap Best Actress nominee) and Dorian Burstein. The production is devised and directed by Rob Murray (2010 international Rolex Mentor and Protégé nominee and Fleur du Cap Award Winner), masks and puppets by Janni Younge (Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Theatre 2010), and sound design by James Webb (Fleur du Cap 2012 Winner).

Underneath a seemingly picture perfect marriage lie many buried secrets and repressed desires. Pictures of You is a quirky story of a marriage under the strain of the legacy of the past. Having premiered at the 2008 National Arts Festival where it quickly became a sleeper hit, Pictures of You has since travelled South Africa, dazzling and beguiling critics and audiences alike.

At first sight, Frank and Janet’s marriage is the picture of perfection; neat, ordered, and respectable. But underneath this, lie deeper truths; buried secrets and repressed desires; sterility and barrenness; and a history of violence that begins leaking out when Frank starts to dream.

It is in the twilight of his dreaming that their barren life starts unravelling, as he meets, and begins to court, the woman of his dreams. As his obsession with his dream creature grows, the thin line between dreaming and reality, between sanity and insanity, and finally between life and death, becomes progressively more blurred, and the claustrophobic atmosphere starts to spin violently out of control.

Grappling with issues such as fear, violence, healing, and ultimately transformation and forgiveness, the 65 minute play interrogates the notion of home and a safety that we try to create for ourselves, and leads its characters on a journey through private hell towards their own personal reconciliation, and ultimately self-acceptance.

Pictures of You has performances on January 30 and 31 at 19h30 in The Theatre – St Anne’s College at Hilton. Tickets R70 (R50 concessions) Booking on 033 343 6100
