ROBIN VAN WYK REPERTOIRE WORKSHOP

(Robin van Wyk)

The Royal Academy of Dance Regional Advisory Panel is proud to announce that the Artistic Director of the Cape Town City Ballet, Pietermaritzburg-born dancer Robin van Wyk, will host a Royal Academy of Dance Repertoire Workshop open to ballet students from pre-primary grade to advanced level from March 4 to 9 2013 at the KZN Dance Centre in Pinetown.

Robin van Wyk received his tertiary ballet training at the University of Cape Town Ballet School before joining the NAPAC Dance Company in 1990. The following year, he moved to PACT Ballet and, in 1997, joined the Cape Town City Ballet where he is presently a Principal Dancer and since 2008, the Artistic Director.

With the CTCB he has danced Romeo in Romeo And Juliet; the Immortal One in Christopher Kindo’s Firebird; Franz in Jean-Paul Comelin’s CoppĂ©lia; Raka in Frank Staff’s ballet of the same name; the Prince in The Nutcracker, and in other works by Balanchine, Spoerli, Adele Blank and Sean Bovim’s Queen At The Ballet.

During 1999, he choreographed his first one act ballet, Geisha, for the Cape Town City. He continues to choreograph for the CTCB and for Youth Ballet companies in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London. To date he has choreographed Robin Hood; Beauty and the Beast; James Bond the Ballet; The Ugly Duckling; Alice in Wonderland; The Sleeping Beauty; Night and Day - a tribute to Cole Porter; The Italian Affair - Balletto d'Amore, and the children's production of Peter Pan.

Awards include the Cape Town FNB Vita Award for Most Promising Choreographer and the Nederburg, FNB Vita and Dalro Awards. In 2011, Robin van Wyk was appointed as International Advisor for Africa to the Royal Academy of Dance.

The repertoire workshop offers participants the unique opportunity to explore ballet through dance, music and acting. Following a brief warm up, participants will learn choreography from a selected scene, gaining an insight into the way in which a corps de ballet dancer studies and rehearses. The workshop will also improve both technical and performance skills. The week will culminate in a Student Performance at Hillcrest High School on March 9 at 14h00.

The workshop takes place from March 4 to 9 at the KZN Dance Centre, 40 Maurice Nichols Road, Hatton Estate, Valiant Park, Pinetown. Fees range from R100 to R650, depending on the grade. Applications close on February 22, 2013.
