PLAYPEN

Opening on Tuesday (February 5) in the Main and Mezzanine Galleries at the KZNSA Gallery is Playpen, a solo photographic exhibition by the internationally acclaimed Roger Ballen.

The exhibition comprises a selection of photographs by Dr Ballen from his series Boyhood, Platteland, Outland, Shadow Chamber, Boarding House and new works from Asylum. The exhibition also features a site specific installation of found objects.

Ballen has produced a wide range of works and his photographs have been showcased in some of the most prestigious institutions around the globe. In addition, his images have been included in collections of institutions such as the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA.

During his career as photographer, Ballen has won many prestigious awards, such as the Best Solo Exhibition at the Sani Festival in Greece in 2000, Best Photographic Book of the year at PhotoEspana in Spain 2001, Photographer of the Year at Rencontres d' Arles in 2002, and the Art Directors Club Award Photography in 2006.

The exhibition is curated by Christina Naurattel, resident Curator of the North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus.

A guest lecture will be presented by Dr. Ballen at 11h00 on February 6 at the KZNSA Gallery.

Playpen opens with a public event on February 5 at 18h00, all welcome. The exhibition will then run until March 3 at the KZNSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, Durban. More information on 031 277 1705 or email: gallery@kznsagallery.co.za
