Accompanied by the KZNPO and the eThekwini
Choristers, top South African soloists combine forces to perform Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise this Easter.
In keeping with tradition The Playhouse
Company will once again stage a classical, religious work over the Easter
weekend. This year’s choice of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2, Hymn of Praise, which the composer
described as “A Symphony-Cantata on Words of the Holy Bible”, promises to be an
uplifting experience for the whole family.
This magnificent semi-staged production
will be directed by Marcus Desando and conducted by maestro Lyk Temmingh, with
the choir trained by seasoned conductor and choir master, Gerhard Geist.
Accompanied by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra
and the eThekwini Choristers, top South African soloists, Bongani Tembe
(tenor), Hanli Stapela (soprano) and Khumbuzile Dlamini (soprano), combine
forces to perform Mendelssohn’s masterpiece in The Playhouse Opera.
Originally composed to celebrate the 400th
anniversary of Johan Gutenberg’s first movable printing press, Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise consists of three
orchestral movements followed by eleven vocal movements. The text of various
Psalms and Bible verses from Ephesians, Isaiah and Romans inspired Mendelssohn
to compose this magnificent work.
Hymn of Praise will be performed on Easter
