An absorbing mix of
sculpture and art comes to Ballito in an exhibition titled In Touch.
Isabel Roos,
curator and owner of Imbizo gallery in Ballito, has gathered together ten
specific artists. Six of the them are sculptors and four are visual artists.
The exhibition will show these ten vastly different styles and skills as the artists
display their unique sense of the aesthetics of life and/or the human form.
Artists exhibiting sculpture
include Marke Meyer, Brandon Borgelt, Llewellyn Davies, Frans Boekkooi, Wendy
von Varendorf and Tania Babb. Visual artists include Everett Duarte, Frances
Schandera-Duarte, Marke Meyer and Mpenja.
According to Isabel
Roos, the title of the exhibition was chosen for a number of reasons: “I feel
this is a perfect title for a group exhibition of this nature. All the artists
exhibiting are fiercely ‘in touch’ with their passion and their chosen subject
matter. These artists are ‘in touch’ with the world and their own sensitivities
thereof.”
The artworks on
exhibition include everything from exciting large abstracts to free standing
sculptures and art photography.
“Sculpture
literally has a tactile quality; a reach out and ‘touch’ quality,” says Roos. “I
am excited about exhibiting this sculpture alongside the large format, highly
textured, abstract paintings and the remarkably sensitive, figurative
photography. The photographic nudes, too, are modelled in a sculptural way
using sensitive, low-key lighting. Interestingly, most of these artists
exhibiting know each other. They, converse, inspire, and stay ‘in touch’ within
the art world. A few of the artists are in fact long time friends and two are
partners in both marriage and work.
“ ‘In touch’ also refers
to the concept of simple communication. Communion between the artist and
his/her work as well as the communication between the finished piece and the
viewer.”
In Touch will be opened by actress Barbie Meyer on April
2 at 18h30. All are welcome to come along to the exhibition, enjoy a glass of
wine and chat to the artists who will be in attendance. Imbizo Gallery is
situated at Shop 7a, Lifestyle Centre, Ballito. The exhibition then runs until April 30.
