This
year, the popular KZN Midlands Matric Art Exhibition has opened earlier than
usual at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg. This means that most of
the works on display are coming from 2012 matriculants.
The Tatham’s
education staff visited all local schools that teach art for Matric to see
final exhibitions. Teachers were asked to keep some of the best artworks and
visual diaries from 2012 aside for the Gallery selection, which takes place
with the help of an invited selector.
“The
present curriculum encourages learners to explore their initial ideas through a
process which includes research, observation and imagination,” says a Tatham representative.
“Every year is different and this time around we were pleasantly surprised to
find so many learners making three dimensional artworks. As usual this exhibition
features an exciting mix of images, ideas, forms, shapes and innovation by our young
artists.”
The KZN
Midlands Matric Art Exhibition opens in the Main Exhibition Room at the Tatham on
March 14 at 18h00 and closes on May 19. The Tatham Art
Gallery is situated opposite
the Town Hall in Chief Albert
Luthuli Street, Pietermaritzburg. More information
