(Lu Dlamini)
Recently seen at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music, songbird
Lu Dlamini with legendary guitarist Steve Newman held the audience in awe with
their combination of complex rhythms and inspiring vocals.
Lu Dlamini has years of experience as backing
singer to some of South Africa’s iconic musicians, namely Brenda Fassie, Sipho
‘Hotsticks’ Mabuse and Jonas Gwangwa, amongst others. Her talent for
interpretation and the facility with which she creates music is testimony to
her upbringing in a family known for its musicians. Legendary Steve Newman, who
has collaborated with a variety of world class musicians and travelled all over
the world with his box, defies generational attitudes as he continues to
explore his instrument.
"That two wise and wonderful people should find each other
and play together is one of music’s tuneful miracles: Lu is a composer who
develops melodies and lyrics on her feet and Steve is a man who needs a lot of
space and freedom. The stark simplicity of guitar and voice is taken to another
level by these virtuoso musicians who combine experience with a creative
approach and who deliver world class music at your doorstep," says the KZNSA gallery which will host the musicians in It's a Wrap.
The event takes place on April 12 at 18h00 and the special
deal includes a wrap (veggie or spicy chicken) glass of wine or beer and the
gig for only R80 (R40 children which includes a big screen movie, hotdog and
chips). Seating is limited to 120 so book your spot through the Arts Café on
031 201 9969. The KZNSA Gallery is situated in Bulwer Road.
