Jewellery Design & Manufacture students
of Durban University of Technology (DUT) will mesmerise patrons with their
intricate creations influenced by the theme, Hidden Gem. Designs draw inspiration from fauna and flora spotted
during trails through the Palmiet Nature Reserve in Westville.
Jewellery such as earrings, rings and
necklaces made of sterling silver are on sale. Pieces are embellished with
wood, gemstones and enamel. Student designers include Slindile Mbelu, Chantal
Benson, Vusi Xaba, Ayanda Myeza (3rd year), Carlo Assumption, Lloyd Moodley and
Zuki Xulu (B-Tech) amongst others.
The collaborative exhibition is presented
by ARROWSA, Fine Art and Jewellery Design at the Durban University of Technology,
CCMS (Centre for Communication, Media & Society) at UKZN and Bechet High
School, Sydenham.
Proceeds from the sale of jewellery will go
towards funding for a small group of ARROWSA-Bechet learners to attend the 2013
Indra Global Congress in Derry, Ireland. The global congress will be an
opportunity for groups of young people from existing and potential Indra
(International Development of the Arts for Reconciliation) centres to come
together and share their practice, ideas and experience. The Congress will coincide with the UK City
of Culture celebrations beginning on Sunday 30 June and finishing on Saturday 6
July.
ARROWSA – Art, Culture & Heritage for
Peace is a voluntary non-profit organisation in South Africa. The programme
seeks to join people as individuals, from organisations and institutions, and
from all over the world in art projects and face-to-face meetings that break
down barriers, and promote conflict resolution and reconciliation, and
understanding.
“We hope to achieve this by sharing our
stories, challenging prejudice and stereotypes, and developing the arts as a
resource for reconciliation and the creative transformation of conflict,” says
ARROWSA chairperson, Mary Lange.
The Hidden
Gem exhibition runs at the (DUT) Art Gallery, Steve Biko Campus, until June
7 at 15h00. Safe parking available (Gate 2 entrance Steve Biko Campus). More
