VALENCIA & DIAS



Appearing in the next recital hosted by Friends of Music will be cellist Santiago Canon Valencia. Born in Bogota, Colombia, he is already well-known for his extraordinary musicality and virtuoso playing. He was a joint prize winner of Beijng cello competition in 2009.

Appearing with Valencia on the piano will be José Dias who was born in Fafe (Portugal) where he had his first private piano lessons, later enrolling at the Academia de Musica Valentim Moreira de Sá in Guimaraes.

The programme includes Pezzo Caproccioso Op.62 by Tchaikovsky; Sonata in A major no.3, op. 69 by Beethoven; Dance of the Green Devil byCassado, Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano and Ginastera Sonata for cello and piano Op.49.

Funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the Prelude Performers are Barry Su and Si Jia Wu on Piano.

Barry Su (18) is currently a Matric student at Durban Girls’ College who does music as an extra-curriculum. She has a passion for music, especially jazz. She will perform King for a Day a solo by Brubeck and the duet America by Bernstein.

Si Jia is currently a grade 11 pupil at DGC. She achieved distinctions and the Role of Honour in both her grade 5 UNISA theory and grade 6 UNISA practical exams in 2012. She will perform Dr Kwela – Mr Ragtime by Roux and Blue Air by Dring.

The concert takes place tonight (June 4) at 19h45 at the Durban Jewish Centre, 44 Old Fort (K.E. Masinga) Road, Durban. Tickets R70 (R60 FOM Members/R20 Orchestral / Students). There is safe parking. For more information visit http://www.friendsofmusic.co.za
