The KZN Youth Orchestra will celebrate
Youth Day today (June 15) at the Essenwood Craft Market on June 15. Spend a
relaxing morning with the orchestra between 10h00 and 14h00. The orchestra
members will also be busking around the Market to raise funds for their
overseas trip.
The KZN Youth Orchestra comprises 62 young
musicians aged 12 to 22 from around KZN. They meet weekly at St Mary's school
in Kloof and perform and retirement complexes and in various concerts around
KZN.
There are two sections to the KZN Youth
Orchestra. The Shadow orchestra is a feeder orchestra and teaches youngsters
who have a lower musical ability the art of playing in an ensemble. They then
progress to the A orchestra. The repertoire of music is varied and encompasses
musical styles from Baroque to contemporary and music with a local flavour!
This year the A orchestra will tour to
Stellenbosch in July and to Germany in September. They recently performed in
the National Creative Arts Youth Festival at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre and
in August they will perform at Mariannhill and with the Zululand Gospel choir
at Empangeni for the local communities .
Anyone who has any unwanted and unused
musical instruments at home, are asked to bring them to donate so that the
orchestra can distribute these instruments to needy schools in KZN.
