GRAHAMSTOWN DIARIES

artSMart Editor Caroline Smart normally provides daily reports from the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

However, while 2013 represented her 27th year as an arts journalist covering the festival it also featured her wearing her hat as a theatre director. She directed two productions: Duncan Buwalda’s Hinterland which featured a “what if?” situation were Cecil John Rhodes and Sol T Plaatje ever to have become associated, and Rhythm Dudes which is a fun inter-active journey through rhythm for young people presented by Stable Theatre.

“Unfortunately, the pressure was such that I was not able to give a daily diary but am now catching up and posting reviews of the productions I saw in Grahamstown. Next year, the Diary will definitely be back!” she says.

Other artSMart reviewers covering the festival were Keith Millar and Sifiso Sikhakhane. All in all, 28 productions were covered by artSMart.
