Magnolia is among this month’s Sony Entertainment Movie Highlight (DStv
Channel 127).
Screened on July 17 at 20h00 and directed
by Paul Thomas Anderson, this is a quirky, intriguing mosaic of stories about
misunderstanding and coincidence, laying bare America’s damaged psyche.
In a number of intersecting narratives, we
meet several sad, brittle and fractured characters, from William H Macy (Shameless, Fargo) as a former quiz whizzkid
stuck in a time warp, to Tom Cruise (Mission:
Impossible, Jack Reacher) as an angry, misogynistic self-help guru. The
cast heaves with the who’s who of indie cinema.
Look out for the weather playing a leading
role – including frogs raining from the sky.
