A bitter slice of life. (Review: John
Harley)
Twei
Mutter (two mothers), directed by Anne Zohra
Berrached, appeared on the recent Durban International Film Festival.
Despite the progressive nature of German
society, in Germany it is still very difficult for gay couples to have
children. Two Women sketches the
relationship between lesbian couple Katja (Sabina Wolf) and Isabella (Karina
Plachetka), as they attempt to have a child through vitro fertilization and the
enormous battle to find a sperm bank willing to comply.
This film most definitely carves a new
space between documentary and feature films - one in which space is found for
multiple truths.
I found the film absolutely fascinating. It
seems to cross over all boundaries of so-called "normal" film making.
It displays an intense sense of honesty and sensitivity and reflects a
fragility that is very moving indeed. The film relies on a stark sense of
Naturalism and minimism in its format which enhances the overall statement of
intent. There is nothing contrived in this movie; no "mere
decorations" in terms of sound or special effects - it comes to you for
what it is ... the cold, harsh (at times, brutal) reality of the loving,
caring, gentle and sensitive needs of two ordinary women.
The performances are cut to the bone; these
two women are not "acting" - they have become! The film also depicts
a very high level of risk from the actors, from the director ... and demands
the same from its audience! Although one discovers throughout the film a great
sense of love and joy, there is an underlying sense of doom and sadness that
continually threatens to emerge! Things are just never what they seem on the
surface - adding a powerful sense of tension and drama.
All in all, a beautifully crafted film
dealing with a most relevant and pertinent issue - reaching deep into one's
heart and soul and touching one's emotions on every level.
The utter shock of the movie comes at the
end, however! Do not expect the norm, you are in for a surprise of your life,
as we are all left with multiple choices - you have to decide the fate of these
two wonderfully in love people. An absolute gem! – John Harley
