Three finalists have been chosen in the first eThekwini Art
Prize Competition. The first prize is to create a five-metre outdoor public art
piece that would distinguish Durban from all other South African cities.
The finalists are Umcebo Design (Robin Opperman and Ujala
Jackie Sewpersad); Clive Sithole and Kerry Wallace. The main prize is worth
R250,000.
A panel of judges consisting of experts in the field of
visual arts, legal matters, engineering and architecture, selected the three
runners up from the entrants received. Judges looked at the cultural relevance;
affordability (eThekwini will pay production costs); intellectual depth;
community engagement; relevance to the site; aesthetic appeal; structural
profundity and tourism appeal when selecting the short list.
The art piece will be erected and accessioned as part of
Durban Art Gallery’s outdoor category of its permanent collection. The winning
art work will be situated at the intersection of Dr Pixley ka Isaka Seme Street
and O.R Tambo Parade in the beach-end of the CBD.
The winner will be announced on Monday (September 30).
