(“Blue Passion Tablet” by Tay Dall)
Abstract
artist Tay Dall is exhibiting at the Imbizo Art Gallery in Ballito KZN with a
show of works under the banner of An
Outside Vision.
If
experience and longevity teaches us anything about art, then Tay Dall’s 24
years of experience as a professional creator of art has earned her the
esteemed place of recognition as one of South Africa’s best known abstract
artists. Tay is known for emotionally-charged paintings of oil on canvas.
However, it is her work on unusual surfaces like old doors, windows, Crete
stone, sheet metal, and broken glass that show her flexibility of mature and
incomparable artistic excellence.
“Culture
presents us with icons of idealised states of being,” she says. “These are,
however, extremely transitory, I therefore physically alter the surface of
everything I paint, allowing my voice to come through. My works express many
feelings through line and colour. I hope the resulting visual atmosphere will
touch viewers emotionally.”
The
world of abstract art that Tay paints within is by no means detached from the
spectator. The viewer of her art is visually encouraged to become engaged by
using his or her own imagination to disseminate an unpredictable and personal
interpretation of meaning. Her work
incites excitement, drama and emotional magic to unfold in the mind’s eye,
without the need of a logical conclusion or explanation. ”It’s for me to know
and for you to find out”, says Tay. What the viewer will find are paintings of
an enormous generosity, purity and directness. Looking at the brush strokes,
one feels impulsiveness and an immense pleasure of creation. Although the work
is more or less abstract, it is deeply personal.
Being an
artistic local talent for more than two decades with more than 100 local and
international exhibitions credited to her name, Tay Dall has been called the
“Mother of South African Abstract Art.” Her works embody an energy, passion and
a purity of being that shines through the deeply layered and colourful canvas.
Her works are undefined universes on their own with an honesty that first disarms
and then charms the viewer. “The greatest reward offered to me as an artist is
seeing how people’s perspectives can change when they are challenged to look at
life through different eyes; my eyes, my creations. Not everyone may like my
paintings or agree with what they stand for, but the essence of being an artist
is about reaction, not acceptance. If you see my work in my studio or at an
exhibition and can’t get the image out of your mind, then I truly have achieved
my ultimate reward.”
