WAR ROOM INTERVENTION PROGRAMME



Call for applicants - qualified and/ or experienced artists to train up-and coming artist in various art forms.

The KZN Department of Arts and Culture seeks experienced and/ or qualified individuals with knowledge and experience working in both the performing as well as visual arts and craft to work as trainers for up and coming artists in the War Room Intervention Programme.

Successful applicants will be placed in selected wards of all local municipalities of the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.

The War Room Intervention Programme was recently launched by the Provincial government and its broad objectives are to:

- Unleash the youth and learners’ talent and potential and channel their creativity towards constructive and productive social activities.
- Inculcate positive attitudes amongst the youth and learners thus addressing social ills such as HIV & AIDS, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, etc.
- Create platforms for the youth to learn and play and use enticing methods to get them attracted to activities that will contribute to life-long learning.
- Get youth, learners and the community in general involved in issues of national importance such as social cohesion, nation building, human rights, cultural diversity etc thus enhancing patriotism.
- Create a skills base by partnering the youth and learners with developed arts and cultural practitioners in various activities thus allowing for skills transfer.
- Promote arts and culture as a tool for enhancing economic opportunities and creating job opportunities.

The training program will focus on the following Practical Technical skills:

- development in musical instruments such as piano/ keyboard; Maskandi (indigenous) guitar; bass and lead guitar; various brass instruments; and various marimba instruments lessons;
- skills in theatrical performance
- skills in various dance (indigenous and contemporary) performance;
- skills in various visual arts and craft products such as pottery making; beadwork; recycled material products (grass, glass, animal skins); beautification of public spaces (visual arts)

Ideal candidates for this program should possess the following skills and experience:
Professional track record as a working artist (in either performing arts or visual arts and craft fields); or Bachelors’ degree or equivalent qualification specializing in one or more of the focus areas of the training program as highlighted above.

Availability and willingness to be part of an educational “experiment” and experience that requires ongoing feedback and commitment to the learning process along the way;

Reliability, passion and ability to communicate at all levels.

Interested qualifying individuals should submit the following:
-An application letter indicating your area of expertise and experience, also indicating the District and local municipality in which you prefer to be placed.
-Filled application form (not Z83) obtainable from the KZNDAC website, Regional offices of the Department, War Rooms and Provincial Art Centres.
- Portfolio of any pertinent artistic projects
- Certified copy of South African ID or valid work permit.
