Steven Stead and Greg King of Durban’s multi-award-winning
theatre company, KickstArt, are planning for their brand new production of the
classic Broadway musical, Annie.
KickstArt will be casting two casts of
girls, in order to lessen the strain of performing. Auditions will take place
on January 18 in room M2 at the Playhouse’s Mayville Complex, Ramsay Road.
“We need female actors aged 9 to 14 years,
of any race group, who are capable of singing and acting to a high level, and
who are capable of speaking and singing English with an American accent, to
play the six orphans in Miss Hannigan’s orphanage, including of course the very
important title role of Annie,” says Stead.
Auditions for the girls will be between 10h30
and 13h30. No reservation of an audition time is necessary but all applicants
should arrive at 10h00 and put their names on a list at the door. They should bring
a short song with sheet music or backing track of Musical Theatre (not pop
music!) that shows an ability to ‘belt’. If applicants get through the singing
audition, they will be required to stay and attend a dance/acting audition. Auditionees
should also prepare a short monologue (approx 1 minute) in an American accent.
The audition lists will close at 11h30.
Wear appropriate rehearsal clothing and
closed footwear for dancing (no slops!). Bring water and snacks and a towel.
There will be call backs in the afternoon
for those who get through the singing, dancing and acting auditions.
The show will rehearse from April 19,
weekday afternoons and/or evenings and weekend daytimes, until it opens on May 16
and runs until June 15. Performances will be Tuesdays to Saturdays at 19h00 and
Saturdays and Sundays at 14h30.
