(“Cross
toppers and processional crosses” by Jongani Mzukwa)
Next week, the KZNSA Gallery will host selected
work by the Graduates and BTech students from the Fine Art and Jewellery
Department at Durban University of Technology.
This exhibition of selected work showcases
the range of work produced by Fine Art and Jewellery Design Diploma and B Tech
degree students during 2013.
Traditionally, the exhibition of selected
graduate work has been held in the departmental studios. However, this year it
was decided to provide the students with the opportunity of exhibiting in a
professional and public space. This initiative was very generously supported by
Corporate Affairs and the Office of the Executive Dean, Dr K Netshiombo.
The work of Fine Art students produced
under the guidance of Andries Botha, Greg Streak, Jan Jordaan, Hendrik
Stroebel, Themba Shibase and John Roome demonstrates a range, individuality and
craft that have been the hallmark of the department for a number of decades.
This is the result of a focus on the development of each student as a creative
individual, using a teaching philosophy based on the integration of theory and
practice and practice led research that is a characteristic of a University of
Technology.
The work reflects on a range of issues
present in contemporary South Africa including class relationships,
homelessness, personal identity, man’s relationship to nature, the city and the
rural/urban cultural divide.
The Jewellery design programme ensures that
the students are able to work in the jewellery industry but then uses this
industry-readiness as a basis from which to develop their creativity and
personal expression. The third year students, with guidance from Samantha
Vincent and Marlene de Beer, produce a range of jewellery which incorporates
the general jewellery skills such as casting, goldsmithing and other
traditional techniques.
The exhibition opens on November 5 at 18h00
and will run until midday on November 10. The KZNSA Gallery is situated at 166 Bulwer
Road, Glenwood, in Durban. More information on 031 277 1703, fax 031 201 8051 or
