CENTRE FOR JAZZ CD’S

CENTRE FOR JAZZ CD’S

The Centre for Jazz at the University of KwaZulu-Natal has a number of CD’s for sale:

The Leap of Faith CD is a product of the very successful and ongoing exchange between the Jazz sections within VCU Arts and the UKZN School of the Arts Music discipline. The VCU Africa Combo comprises Chris Ryan (guitar), Victor Haskins (trumpet), Trey Sorrells (alto sax), Brendan Schnabel (tenor sax), Justin Esposito (bass), and C J Wolfe (drums). They are directed by Prof. Antonio Garcia (trombone). The UKZN Legacy band consists of Sebastian Goldswain (guitar), Lungelo Ngcobo (UKZN), Sakhile Simani (trumpet), Sphelelo Mazibuko (drums), Ildo Nandja (bass), and Linda Sikhakhane (tenor sax), directed by Neil Gonsalves. The ten track Leap of Faith CD is on sale for R100 at The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music and from http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/vcujazz3 All proceeds accrue to the Ronnie Madonsela Scholarship.

Flamenco guitarist, Demi Fernandez and jazz pianist, Neil Gonsalves have released their debut duo CD, Latinfluence. The title of the CD refers to the broad range of Latin music that the duo draws influence from. The six tracks include four original compositions and two Latin standards, which have been elaborately and extensively arranged to demonstrate the orchestral potential of the guitar and piano duo. The Latinfluence CD sells for R120 at The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music. The duo will follow up the CD with live performances in the New Year.

Durban-based all-female jazz sensation, Heels Over Head, launched their second offering, an EP titled Sondela in November 2013. This is a follow-up to their very popular album called Could It Be? which garnered them a SAMA nomination in the Contemporary Jazz Category back in 2011. Consisting of six tracks, this latest effort shows how far the ladies have grown musically since their first offering. Unlike their debut album, which they composed and produced themselves with the EP they have opened up to more collaborations and to the creativity of some of the contributors outside the band. Heels over Head comprise Thulile Zama (vocals), Nomkhosi Mazibuko (vocals), Rebekah Pillay (drums), Lindelwe Ngonelo (keys) and Ashley Burgess (keys). This is another excellent statement by Heels Over Head, they have grown, and it is felt throughout this EP. The Sondela EP is on sale for R60 at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music and from http://www.heelsoverheadband.com/
