CAPTAIN PHILLIPS

(Tom Hanks as the Alabama's commanding officer)

Ster-Kinekor and Cinema Nouveau are giving movie lovers a chance to catch some of the multi-Oscar nominated titles.

Captain Phillips is being shown at Cinema Nouveau at Gateway, giving audiences an immersive cinema experience to appreciate fully the emptiness of space and the vastness of the ocean.

The film is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the US container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. Through director Paul Greengrass's distinctive lens it is simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalisation. The film has received four Golden Globes nominations and has been nominated in six Academy Awards® categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Writing – Adapted Screenplay.

Captain Phillips focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (played by two time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi) who has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips' unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.
