Durban’s
top independent theatre company, KickstArt, will hold auditions for two large-scale
musical theatre projects due to take place in the second half of 2014: the
incredible Sondheim musical, Sweeney Todd
in August, and the family pantomime, Aladdin
scheduled for December.
Auditions
will be held on February 15 at the Playhouse’s Mayville Studios in Ramsay Road:
Sweeney Todd auditions will be held from 10h00 to 13h00
Aladdin auditions will be held from 14h30 to 16h00
“We are
looking for strong, classically inclined singers for Sweeney Todd and versatile, charismatic dancers for Aladdin,” says Steven Stead, KickstArt’s
Executive Director.
Singers
interested in auditioning for Sweeney
Todd need to learn the whole opening number of the show, The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, and arrive
at 10h00 to put their names on a list. The sheet music for the audition song is
available from the producers: email kickstart@letni.co.za
for a copy.
It is
not absolutely necessary to memorise the audition song, candidates may sing
from the score, but they must be totally familiar with the music and be able to
act while singing. Candidates must be able to sing to a very high level and be
adept at harmony work. They must also be able to speak English with a
Cockney/London accent. All races and ages welcome.
Sweeney Todd will rehearse from July 13 and run at the
Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from August 7 to 24.
Dancers
for Aladdin will be auditioned in a
group at 14h30. Male and female dancers aged 18 to 35 may audition. Please sign
in from 14h00. Please arrive warmed up, wearing appropriate dance clothing, and
ladies should bring cabaret heels and ballet pumps. Being able to sing is an
added advantage, but not a prerequisite.
Aladdin will rehearse from November 10, and perform
at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from December 5 to January 11.
