CULTURE@KEARSNEY

Initiative to give pupils the opportunity to display their talents. (Report by Keith Millar)

Monday night saw the launch of Kearsney College’s Culture@Kearsney programme for 2014. In its second year, this fantastic initiative will give school pupils the opportunity to display their talents in both the performing and visual arts fields in a safe and supportive environment.

Throughout the year, Kearsney will host a series of competitions and festivals with the aim to promote cultural appreciation in the youth and to unite communities through a common love of the arts.

Starting with an art exhibition which ran through this week, the programme includes a drama festival of one-act plays in July, a dance festival in August, a photographic competition in September and, as a grand finale, a festival of both primary and high school choirs in October.

If the art which was on display at the Art Exhibition is anything to go by, then supporters of Culture@Kearsney are in for a rare treat. With exhibits from a variety of schools, one could not help but be impressed with the fresh and youthful vitality of the works on display. This exhibition, in the Greyhound Pavilion at the school, was worth a visit in its own right.

In her address at the launch, the Director of Clubs and Culture at Kearsney College, Andrea Fripp, said that there were not enough opportunities for pupils to display their creative talents. Through Culture@Kearsney the school hoped to revitalize the arts in KZN and to provide a platform to encourage all communities to get involved.
Guest of honour, Shelly Mclean, appealed for an equal investment in culture and sport by schools. She stressed that all schools have a responsibility to develop their pupils through the visual and performing arts.

The guests were also treated to a beautiful rendition of Lorde’s Royals by Kearsney’s Grade 11 acapella group. This was the cherry on the top of what was an inspiring event.

All school are invited to participate in the Culture@Kearsney programme. For further information contact Andres Fripp, the Director of Clubs and Culture at Kearsney College. Phone 031 765 9600 or email afripp@kearsney.com
