(Robin
van Wyk)
Pietermaritzburg-born dancer Robin van Wyk
will host the inaugural KZN Midlands Youth Ballet Company Summer School open to
ballet students from pre-primary grade to advanced level. The School runs this
week (March 3 to 8) at the Athlone Primary School, Old Howick Road,
Pietermaritzburg and is open to ballet students from Primary Grade to Advanced.
Robin van Wyk, who is the Artistic Director
of the Cape Town City Ballet, initiated The Midlands Youth Ballet Company in
2013 with the support of
Pietermaritzburg and Midlands-based members of the Royal Academy of
Dance, the Cecchetti Society, and the Dance Academy of South Africa. The
project forms part of the Cape Town City Ballet Children Education and Outreach
Project.
The object is to promote the pursuit of and
public interest in all aspects of ballet among the youth of KZN Midlands; to
promote theatre dance as a cultural performing art; and to offer students of
ballet a broad range of knowledge and experience of that art form.
The week culminates in a student
performance entitled Tastes From The
Nutcracker Ballet at the Winston Churchill Theatre on March 8 at 15h00
which will enable parents and friends to evaluate the progress achieved by the
dancers in the space of a few days. Tickets will be sold at the theatre from 09h00.
