In March, M-Net Movies Showcase (channel
108 on DStv) will feature more than 50 films by master moviemaker Steven
Spielberg!
How many awards have been clinched by
Spielberg films? How often has his genius changed the course of movie making
history? How many times have his films smashed previous records at box-offices
worldwide? How many careers have been launched by his endeavours? In how many
countries has he been honoured for his extraordinary contribution to popular
culture? And how often has the very name Steven Spielberg been mentioned by
movie lovers around the globe to refer to superb movie-making?
Included will be early work such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind
(1977) to Spielberg classics from the 80’s like Jaws, ET: The Extra-Terrestrial and The Colour Purple; box-office sensations like Jurassic Park and Hook; serious
fare such as Schindler's List, Lincoln
and Saving Private Ryan; and special
effect showpieces like the majestic War of the Worlds.
"Having so many Spielberg films on a
movie channel in one month is an extra-ordinary feat," says M-Net's Head
of Publicity and Special Projects, Lani Lombard. "This is the biggest
Spielberg television extravaganza ever, and the result of more than two years
of planning and hard work on the side of our M-Net movie team. In the late 90’s,
M-Net ran a Steven Spielberg movie festival that captured the imagination of
our viewers. This one is way bigger and a comprehensive update of his massive oeuvre. It's
a mega-treat for movie lovers.
"While some viewers will dip into the
schedule to watch their favourite Spielberg movies again or find out what the
fuss was about,” Lombard continues, “some others - cinema buffs- will be able
to track in detail the way movies changed over the years, the Spielberg way."
There will be at least one movie directed
or produced by Steven Spielberg scheduled in prime time on the M-Net Movies
Showcase channel in March, but on most dates movie lovers will be able to enjoy
more than one. In addition to this, M-Net Movies Showcase will also screen the
two critically acclaimed mini-series The
Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
