eThekwini filmmakers will be given the
invaluable opportunity to meet and learn from one of South Africa’s prominent
script writers and AFDA Durban Lecturer, Janet van Eeden, who will be the guest
speaker at the upcoming Independent Filmmaking Workshop on Saturday (May 31).
Concept
to story development will be the topic of the day
and attendees can expect to see special screenings of locally produced films.
The Independent Filmmaking Workshop,
previously known as the Zero Budget Filmmaking Workshop, is a film industry
developmental initiative. A programme of the Durban Film Office and non-profit
organisation, is managed by eThekwini Filmmakers Association (EFA), with the
goal to help educate and equip filmmakers with necessary industry fundamentals
and insight.
“This is an opportunity for budding and
aspiring filmmakers to engage from their first-hand experience at the workshop
what the film industry is all about,” said Durban Film Office Head Toni Monty.
Guest speaker, Janet van Eeden is a
distinguished expert in scriptwriting and is currently a Script Writing
Lecturer at the Academy of Film and Dramatic Arts (AFDA). She lectured
previously at the Wildlife Film Academy, and is also the Writer/Producer at
SHOT Productions. Her film project A Shot
At The Big Time, a selected project first debuted in 2012 at the annual
film production and finance market, the DFM. The short film premiered at the
DIFF in July 2013, won an EFA award in November 2013 and was selected for this
year’s Cannes Short Film Metrage where it was also screened.
“Janet van Eeden has exactly what the
Independent Filmmaking Workshop needs; a wealth of experience, invaluable
insight and knowledge to share with filmmakers. She is a notable expert who we
see as a source of inspiration for budding filmmakers, as she has proven that
as an industry leader, she can successfully contribute to local, national and
international filmmaking,” said EFA Chairperson Andile Buwa.
