In February of 2014, the BAT Centre decided
to create a unique Theatre project focusing on youth’s experiences of Freedom
in South Africa after 1994. The show will be performed in the BAT centre’s Main
Hall.
“We sent out a call for auditions to
several schools, diverse communities and online, seeking participants born
during and after 1994, and auditioned many talented youth” says one of the
show’s co-Directors, Jonathan Heidorn (a 20 year old theatre graduate from
Germany).
Eric “Coolfire” Hadebe a popular radio
presenter, poet and co-director of the show explain, “After training workshops
and rigorous rehearsals we ended up with 10 youths who will present the work on
the 16th of June.”
The youth have called their work How Far? which shows the intimate lives,
challenges and highlights of the young generation. Whether you agree with them
or not, they are thought-provoking, often funny, and display some impressive
acting ability. This team of ‘born-frees’ look into the mirror and share their
experience of “What has shaped them? What do they seek to change? How far have
they come?”
Co-director Menzi Maseko, an accomplished
spoken word performer says “We are proud of our actors, some of whom have
performed in major musicals and some have very little stage experience. Their
shared stories remind us what a beautiful, turbulent and interesting country we
live in. Very different from 20 years ago.”
How
Far? takes place at the Sipho Gumede Hall at the BAT
Centre today (June 16) at 15h00 (doors open at 14h30). Entrance R20
