The Tortoise’s Dream,
a play for children, is coming up at the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg
this weekend.
It is a delightful African tale about a Tortoise who dreams
about a magical fruit-laden tree and the animals’ search to find it. Directed
by Ntokozo Madlala, a lecturer at the UKZN Pietermaritzburg drama department,
the show is targeted at 6 to 10 year olds. It is performed by the postgraduate
acting class of 2014, with delightful designs and masks by Jess Killerby.
With enthusiasm, energy and colour, they take audiences on
an enchanting journey. Children get to meet fantastical characters such as
Freddie the Frog, Penny the Peacock, Betty the Bumblebee, Tiny the Tortoise,
Dora the Giraffe, Mlomo the Monkey and Lion, King of the Jungle. The journey
turns into a race as the animals vie to be the first to find the magical tree
of life. One by one they set out on a journey where they encounter various
obstacles. As it turns out, one of the smallest animals in the jungle gets it
right!
The Tortoise’s Dream has
performances at the Hexagon on July
25 at 18h00 and July 26 at 09h30 and 11h30. Tickets R25 at the door or e-mail hexagon@ukzn.ac.za for bookings. The
