Following its huge success at this year's National Arts
Festival in Grahamstown, the hilarious musical comedy, Dear Breeder, is a whirlwind of quirky delight and is heading for a
return season in Durban. The award winning musical comedy will be showing from August
28 until 31 at Seabrooke’s Theatre at Durban High School (DHS).
First performed at the Musho! Theatre Festival where it won
two awards, Dear Breeder also picked
up a coveted Standard Bank Ovation Award at Grahamstown's NAF.
Directed by Iain 'Ewok' Robinson, Dear Breeder is a mad-cap two-woman show featuring Karen Logan and Kasia Vosloo that is inspired by the
performers’ first-hand experience of being breeders themselves.
‘‘I think what people really respond to is the way we’ve
captured some of the insanity, hilarity and joy of being a parent today,’’
comments Logan, who effortlessly switches between three very different South
African mothers – all thrown together through their efforts to make a success
of the local primary school’s Nativity play.
Vosloo plays the quirky, recently-pregnant drama teacher, Ms
du Bois, whose hilarious folk-parody songs provide satirical commentary to the
mothers' antics. ‘Absurd to the point of genius’ was one critic's description
of these musical interludes.
‘’Sometimes, in the middle of the chaos, you just need to
take a step back and laugh at yourself!’’ says Vosloo.
Whether it’s Darth Vader, the under-wear fairy or the
staple-gun wielding baby Jesus, Dear
Breeder has something for everyone and will especially appeal to moms, dads
and grandparents. Written on the playground, in between bites of Barney-iced
cupcakes, it is a tribute to parenting and surviving with a smile.
There will be fundraising performance on August 28 at 19h00
for 19h30 supporting the Robin Hood Foundation’s Love the Babies project. Tickets
R100 and audience memberss are encouraged to bring a box of crayons for the Uminathi
Crèche in Mariannhill and stand the chance of winning a lucky draw prize.
Dear Breeder runs
for only five shows between August 28 and 31 at Seabrooke's Theatre at Durban
High School (DHS) with shows on 29 and 30 at 19h30 and additional matinees on August
30 and 31 at 14h30. Tickets R80 and booking is essential through Karen on 074
