(Jim Gorissen)
Dutch Rhythm
guitarist Jim Gorissen will perform at the KZNSA Gallery on August 15.
Jim Gorissen,
(Stein, the Netherlands, 1951) began playing the guitar and arranging music as
a boy of 13. He focuses mainly on The Latin American Music and is always on a
search for the jazz element in this style. Brazilian music with its rhythmic
drive and swing also gets his attention. The syncopated rhythm patterns of the
Samba , the Bossa Nova and the modern Partido alto appeals to him most of all.
"Rhythm" as a driving force in the World Music as a whole keeps
fascinating him. It was inevitable that also Flamenco became one of his big
inspirations.
In Durban, the
Dutch guitarist brings jazz with Latin and Flamenco influences. He will have a
strong Durban band behind him with highly respected musicians that are
well-known to local music lovers: Mike Mazzoni and Paki Peloeole on drums, Ildo
Nandja on bass, Richard Ellis on percussion and Shemual Mahabeer on keys. The
band will be joined on vocals by diva Thulile Zama know from Heels over Head
and powerful voice Shomon.
Gorissen started
performing in a rock band and this encouraged him to take up guitar lessons and
music theory at the local School of Music. Gorissen began his piano lessons when
he was 15 years of age and played in many Rock and Blues bands in the
Sittard-Geleen area and in Heerlen. He went on to study classic guitar with
Albert Hempe, an excellent guitarist and a teacher at the School of Music in
Heerlen. Albert Hempe laid the foundation for Jim's further study at the
Conservatory of Music in Maastricht, and at the age of 18 Jim discovered Jazz.
Fascinated by its rhythm right from the start, that same rhythm became a
driving spirit that would fascinate him for rest of his life.
He studied classical
guitar with Guus Dresens, Jazz with Joep van Leeuwen and also took lessons from
John Thomas (Berklee) in Aachen, Germany. After taking several private lessons
from Garrison Fewel (Berklee) Jim only encountered "World Music" at a
later stage.
Jim is a guitar teacher
at Artamuse, an institute for music and dance in Sittard-Geleen and runs his
own school: Guitarworld in Houthem - St. Gerlach in the municipality of
Valkenburg aan de Geul. He performed with several musicians and artists like
Andreas Müller, Manny Hilger, Pitty Fröschen, Mitch Caanen, Frans Vink, Harald
Pelzer, Nicole Claussen, Fer Visser, Peter van Kempen, Lou Fijten, Hans
Hoffman, Jan Hallema, Bart Spits, Peter Notermans, Roy van Ginsel, Roel
Pastoor, Patrick Smits, Alouis Koch, Theo Molinaro, Annemiek Lebens - Kusters
and many more.
