The Durban University of Technology’s Department of Drama
& Production Studies’ Children’s Festival was founded by Professor Debbie
Lutge. Now in its fourth year, it will take place in the Courtyard Theatre from
September 29 to October 3.
Each year the event chooses a Durban writer to profile and the
2014 festival features five original productions for young audiences by master
storyteller, Gcina Mhlophe. The plays are aimed at primary schools and will be
performed by first-year Drama Studies students.
The plays being performed are:
Lungile –
September 29 and 30 at 09h30: Directed by Nellie Ngcongo, this is a story about
the wooing of a beautiful maiden and how she finds love. For Grade 1 and up.
Have You Seen Zandile?
– October 3 at 11h30: Directed by Siza Patrick Mthembu, this is the
autobiographical story of a little girl snatched away from a nurturing gogo.
For Grade 2 and up
Storyseeker –
September 30 at 11h30 and October 1 at 09h30: Directed by Pamela Tancsik. Originally
written as a shadow play by Adi Paxton, Gerard Samuel and Pamela Tancsik, the
work was inspired by Gcina Mhlophe’s Xhosa story of Mazanendaba who goes on a
road trip to find out how stories came into the world. For Grade 2 and up
The Bremen
Town-Musicians – October 1 at 11h30: Directed by Pamela Tancsik, it is based
on the famous Grimm’s fairy tale. DUT Educational Theatre students together with
Pamela Tancsik adapted the story to transfer it to the stage. For Grade 1 and

A story from
Fudukazi’s Magic – October 2 at 09h30:
Directed by Debbie Lutge. Set in the African bush it is about just desserts
and a tortoise adding a rainbow of colours to the coats of Africa’s wild life.
Adapted for the stage by GenbiaHyla with musical composition by Madlen
Tzankova. For Grade 1 and up
