THE GOLDEN GOOSE

(Katy Moore)

(Review from the artSMart team covering the 2014 Witness Hilton Arts Festival which ran at Hilton College from September 19 to 21)

An enjoyable and charming 40 minutes. (Review by Pauline Dalais)

The Golden Goose was presented in the Once Upon a Time category of the Creative Madness programme masterminded by Peter Court at the Witness Hilton Arts Festival.

Aimed at “really little people” and presented by Katy Moore. The Golden Goose was an interactive fun production which was greeted with delight by youngsters and parents alike.

The stage was bare, with just a box filled with puppets which could be transformed into a forest or a castle.

The story deals with parents who desperately need firewood and two of their sons go into the forest at separate times, each having an encounter with a magic man who tests their generosity by asking for some of their cake and wine. Both fail the test.

The last son, Jack, is always the brunt of family ridicule and they call him Dummling. He begs to go into the forest and reluctantly his parents agree although the contents of his picnic basket are less delicious than those of his brothers.

Dummling passes the magic man’s generosity test and ends up with a golden goose. What follows is a fun adventure involving the three horrible daughters of the innkeeper as well as the king and his grumpy daughter. In the end, Dummling emerges the hero of the story.

Simply dressed, Katy Moore gives an enchanting rendition of the story, changing her voice to suit the different characters. She calls on young audience members to take on some of the roles and these invitations are accepted with great gusto and enthusiasm.
