Award-winning dance theatre production celebrates the incredible fusion of KZN's various cultures.

While politicians continue to grapple with the complexities of social cohesion in KwaZulu-Natal, the arts have come up with a winning formula to bring diverse communities together under the umbrella of a new democracy.

20 of Durban's finest, most skilled contemporary dancers in collaboration with some of the city's most talented and classically-trained musicians and dancers will create a joyous, seamless inter-cultural fusion of dance, the spoken word, film and music that promises to take Durban by storm next month.

This intriguing collaboration joins dancers from the Flatfoot Dance Company and the Playhouse Dance Residency whose movements will be fused with the sounds of the djembe drum (played by Mandla Matsha), the Indian tabla (Vishen Kemraj), the South African maskanda guitar (Madala Kunene), African- and contemporary dance and classical Indian dancers (including performances by Manesh Maharaj) and the spoken word from poet Raheem Kemet.

As one of three highly acclaimed productions selected by the Playhouse Company for its 20 Years of Democracy season, Bhakti will be staged at the Drama Theatre for a short run from November 28 to 30.

Playhouse Company CEO and artistic director, Linda Bukhosini said special emphasis was given to identifying productions that were of high artistic quality, had enjoyed acclaim and recognition in the wider performing arts industry and were relevant to the theme of the country's new democracy.

First created by choreographer, Lliane Loots in 2010, Bhakti went on to win one of the coveted Ovation Awards at the National Arts Festival a year later.

Loots explained: "… My own physical and spiritual journeys to the East, and my deeply embedded love of my home - Africa - all come together in this work which is really a long dance prayer or devotion offered to gods, goddesses and ancestors alike.”

Bhakti runs from November 28 to 30. Tickets R80 and bookings is through Computicket.
