The Beverly Hills Hotel in Umhlanga is a proud supporter of
67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day and has offered to host a gathering of KnitWits
for Madiba at 18h00 for 18h30 on Wednesday (March 18).
“This will be an early evening affair where we will spend 67
minutes crocheting and knitting as many squares as we possibly can to see how
many blankets we can make in that short space of time,” says the project’s
founder, Carolyn Steyn. “Squares should measure 20cm x 20cm. Our efforts will
be rewarded with canapés and bubbly, which the Beverly Hills Hotel has kindly
agreed to provide.
“Together we are going full steam ahead to create 21,000 blankets
to spread across the vast lawns of the Union Buildings on April 21 to mark 21
years of democracy and to show the world what we are doing, stitch by stitch,
to keep the legacy of Madiba alive,” Steyn continues. “These will then be
distributed to those in need throughout South Africa. This will be a milestone
event and we will have one or two surprises up our sleeve! Now is the time to
start the countdown to 21,000 blankets! Thank you, Beverly Hills Hotel! Onward
and Knitward!”
Entrance to the event is a homemade blanket or a donation of
R100 worth of wool. The Glenwood wool outlet, One Stitch at a Time, has
graciously offered a preferred rate on the special 67 Blankets for Nelson
Mandela Day wool - a pack of five balls will cost R100 and supporters will be
able to purchase the wool on arrival at the hotel. If you don't know how to
knit or crochet, someone will be on hand to help you learn.
