Essenwood Craft Market - one of the region’s pioneer arts,
craft, fashion, gifts, food and collectables markets – is gearing up for the
Easter season by offering visitors a bumper range of active things to do for
the littlies, and a cosy place to enjoy a leisurely Saturday morning al-fresco
brunch.
With the Easter holidays around the corner, and with
families looking for things to do over the weekend, the market has consciously
increased the range and selection of child-friendly and family-friendly
activities.
“We want to ensure that the market’s focus is firmly
family-friendly,” considers the market’s Cyan Brown, “We are situated in a park
environment with a functioning play area which is perfect for children to run
around. There are also creative projects for children to enjoy – sand-art;
face-mask making; biscuit and cupcake icing; beading and crafts. To complement
this, we have a shaded supervised play area for the little ones, free pony
rides, and feature weekly child-focused activities – be it fire-engine rides;
fair-ground attractions; face-painting and children’s games.”
Over the Easter period, there will be Easter egg hunts and
Easter themed participative events.
The market, which was established in 1993, takes place every
Saturday morning from 09h00 until 14h00 under the trees a stone’s throw away
from Musgrave Centre.
The stalls offer a range of gift options: books; music;
jewellery; decor items; clothing; accessories; plants; fresh flowers; health
and beauty products; edible treats; original artwork; crafted goods and
children’s wear and accessories. The market offers more than a hundred
different specialist stalls.
Historically, one of the attractions of Essenwood is the tea
garden. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely meal in the shade of the enormous trees
in the park alongside the children’s play area. The tea tables are serviced –
the presence of waitrons mean no standing in queues - and there is subtle background
music.
Interspersed among the traders, are charity stalls to raise
funds and create awareness for a myriad charities, causes and NGOs – many of
them animal-centred charities.
Essenwood Market is pram and wheelchair-friendly throughout
and well-behaved pets on a leash are welcome. Visitors parking is available in
Essenwood, St Thomas, Berea Park and Sydenham Roads with car guards on site.
