African Music, Funk, Jazz and Latin fusion outfit, Banda
Banda and the Crocodiles, come to KZN for a three gig tour at the end of April.
Bassist Banda Banda has always been outspoken about being an
African and wanting to be the African voice to be heard all over the world. This
shows in his music and his love for world music, pop and jazz.
Spending time with Bheki Mseleku and Sandile Shange
contributed to his growth. He also got to work and tour with top artists such
as Sibongile Khumalo, Busi Mhlongo, Madala Kunene and Thandiswa Mazwai. He has
made a name for himself as a knowledgeable bass player with great people
skills.
The Crocodiles project was born from the idea of putting on
one stage great versatile musicians from different parts of the world and
musical backgrounds. With Banda’s diverse influences of different cultures and
backgrounds he wanted to offer an exciting project in which the meltpot of
those influences came together.
Banda Banda and The Crocodiles is all about cultural
exchange and sharing. The Durban band consists of Banda Banda on bass guitar,
Dr. Sazi Dlamini on guitar, Sam Ibeh on drums, Mthunzi Mvubu on saxophone,
Sibusiso Mkhize on trumpet and Lungelo Ngcobo on keys.
There is a lot of experience and diversity between all these
musicians, which makes this project very exciting. Most of the music is written
and arranged by Banda Banda himself. The project fuses African Music, Funk,
Jazz and Latin. Influences to the sound are bands like Sixun, Taiwa Molelekwa,
Joe Zawinul and the Syndicate, Miles Davis , Manu Dibago and Salif Keita.
They will be playing on two dates:
April 29 at 18h00 at The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music,
(CJPM) Level 2, Shepstone Building at UKZN Howard College Campus. Doors open at
17.30. Admission R50 (R30 pensioners/R20 students).

May 1 at Seamans’s Corner in Unit 3, Hammarsdale,
Mpumalanga. Doors open at 18h00 with the show at 19h00. Entrance R30.
This tour is supported by Concerts SA and produced by
iSupport Music Business. As part of the tour Banda Banda and The Crocodiles
will also visit Mdepha High School in Cato Ridge on April 30.and give a
workshop concert to the learners.
