(Sarah Richard & Rowan Bartlett)
Innovative and
interactive experience sure to be a hit with young people. (Review by Keith
Millar)
Standing by and
ready to entertain the young folk at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo this
Easter Holiday period is the Actors Unemployed Company with their enchanting
mini musical, Penelope Pixie’s Birthday
Adventure.
It is a production
filled with jubilant song, dance and comedy, and plenty of interactive action
and excitement.
Penelope Pixie is a
Princess in the land of Ridiculosa. It is her birthday and she and her best friend,
a rather timid Goblin named Gary, set off on an adventure to Magic Mountain. There
they meet the awkward Troll, Barry Boulderfist. He is looking for that extra something
to add to the concoction he is cooking in his giant pot. The result is a
frantic run-around, which, with considerable help from the audience, ends with
everyone (you guessed it) living happily ever after.
Then, after a short
interval, the young members of the audience are invited to join the actors on
stage for a brief workshop on musical theatre. After learning the various elements,
they put together one of the musical numbers from the show. It is remarkable
how quickly the youngsters got the general idea and put on quite a credible
performance.
The role of
Penelope is played with charm by the vivacious Sarah Richard, while Marc Kay is
an animated Gary the Goblin. Rowan Bartlett is the scary Troll Barry
Boulderfist. The production is by Bryan Hiles and the original music is by Dale
Scheepers.
So, if you are up
for a bit of song and dance this Easter Holiday the Rhumbelow Theatre in
Cunningham Road, Umbilo, is the place to go. Penelope Pixie’s Birthday Adventure is an innovative and
interactive experience which is sure to be a hit with our young people.
