The annual Durban Dance
Movement Festival returns this year with its third instalment of showcasing and
celebrating the best of dance in KwaZulu-Natal.
In collaboration with the
Department of Arts and Culture the festival promises to be bigger and better
this year and showcases the province’s diverse cultures through African
contemporary, Hip hop, break dancing, kwaito, traditional Zulu and Indian
dance, ballet and many other styles for a wide variety of audience to enjoy.
There will be over 150
dancers from all over KZN from groups and studios like Dance Movement, Minette
De Klerk Academy, Footworx dance studio, young star productions and stage
burners.
“I’m so excited about this
festival because not only do we have more groups to participate this year but
also we have the opportunity to showcase our works on a bigger and professional
stage at the Playhouse Drama,” said artistic director Jarryd Watson.
There will be two shows:
15h00: Junior and senior
level performances from youngsters aged 5-18
19h30: Professional groups
from KZN Dance Academy, KwaMashu Theatre Dance, Blue Fire Productions, Dance
Movement and new break dance sensation group Lil’ Raskals.
“I love what this festival
represents and the fact we can have the privilege of exposing all dancers from
beginners to professionals in a professional space and this is the very
essences of social cohesion, development, growth and sustainability in the arts
and culture sector,” adds Watson. “However as art practitioners we still find
ourselves in the struggle of producing such festivals because of the lack of
funding and support that we receive and this makes it difficult for development
to continue. None the less the show must go on!”
The Durban Dance Movement Festival
will take place in the Playhouse Drama theatre on June 27 with shows at 15h00
and 19h30. Booking is through Computicket or 082 683 9665. For more information
