(Reviews from the
artSMart team currently in Grahamstown at the 2015 National Arts Festival)
Charming Loyiso unites a nation through comic excellence.
(Review by Thomie Holtzhausen)
Loyiso Gola’s State of
the Nation address currently at the Grahamstown Arts festival until July 8 wows
audiences from all backgrounds racial divides and is truly South African. It is
not the World July Cup or red berets or the repayment of the fire hydrant
swimming pool that will unite this country, but humour. Gola stands proof of that.
Gola draws in the crowd with his comfortable, non-aggressive
and charming presence on stage. Unlike most stand-up comedians owning the stage
with an almost self-absorption, Gola portrays trust and warmth. No holy cow,s indeed, but done with pathos
and leaving one feeling as if all in South Africa is actually well if only we
can laugh at it.
